I’d had a good nights sleep on my ‘expensive’ Pullman seat (recliner) and woke around 7 a.m. to a fairly gentle swell as we continued over the Bay of Biscay and towards Santander,Spain..
I got up, and after a quick wash went out onto the upper deck, where there was an ‘Orca’ wildlife guide.. giving some hints on whale, porpoise, and dolphin watching, along with a myriad of other wildlife creatures, that were apparently around, although I didn’t see many !
I spent a cold couple of hours scanning the horizon, with the promise of whales to be seen.. there was a chap on the other side of the ship, who seemed to be a self proclaimed ‘expert’, who was continually pointing things out to people… and, amazingly no one was able to see them ( in time !!?)..I stayed on the other side !
I did manage to see some Pilot whales in the far distance, an Ocean Star fish..apparently a good spot, although it looked like a plastic bag to me !
Eventually the cold got to me, and I went inside for my last ‘Full English’ and amazingly whilst I sat eating it, a school of Dolphins came cavorting around the ship, I needn’t have got cold after all !
By midday we docked in Santander, and I was soon out on the open road, having decided to stop at a campsite on the outskirts of Bilbao, and take a bus trip in to the City ..
Without too much difficulty I arrived at ‘Camping Playa Arenillas’, in Islares, Cantabria..and I was soon pitched on a nice sunny spot, and immediately broke out the shorts !
The campsite is located next to a surfing beach, and whilst I was out looking around was able to watch the surfers ‘ catching the waves’ ! (and had forgot my camera !) , then it was back to Wally, and got my bike out for a ride along the road along the coast.. and watching the waves hitting rocks, and shooting up blow holes.. quite a different sight…and another sight, a sign I hope to see plenty of next year …??
Then it was back to camp, relax in the evening sun, shower change and treat myself to a nice meal at the Restaurant next door…and a relatively early night, ready for Bilbao tomorrow..
Buenos Nochas
