I was up early, trying to beat the threatened rain, as it was the weekend of Pentecost , and a bank holiday in France, so I wondered whether the shops may be closed Monday – I’m still not sure !
I cycled up to the nearest L’Eclerc giant supermarket, and got what I need, filling my panniers to the brim, and struggling back to the campsite, with my provisions for the next few days –who needs a car..??
I was fortunate, as the rain returned, along with a cold wind, and so I started another book, having a nice lunch whilst reading, then early afternoon I couldn’t stay in any longer, and so set off on a bike ride, along the nearby Voie Verte, a dedicated path, on what I think was an old railway line..and soon I was at the other end of the line 18kms away in Pierrefitte-Nestasas..having seen a Falcon hunting in the fields next to the line, and gazing up at the still snow covered mountains.. I thought this is the way, get out…it’s not raining, and determined to travel up into the mountains after the weekend…
So what happens when you’re furthest away from where you want to be ? No, not a puncture, or ‘mechanical’, Yes..the rain started, light at first until the heavens opened, and I had to travel all the way back to Lourdes in heavy rain (my clothes needed changing anyway !).. a 26 mile round trip, although I was soaked, it was nice to be out !
Showered, and my anticipated BBQ cancelled..I made the chilli, with some nice wine and cheese to accompany it..and now warming up a little, so Bonne Nuit !
