It’s funny, you wouldn’t imagine being cold, when the temperature is 24c !- but that’s what it felt like at 5 a.m. as the cock was crowing in the nearby farm…with all the birds singing…what a pleasant place this seems to be
I had a leisurely breakfast, then thought I’d go out for a ride to the nearby village, so set off not long after 10 a.m., I was soon roasting hot, dripping in sweat I climbed up towards the village of Pietracorbara..and hamlets in between..although not a particularly steep road, it was all upwards…and I was obviously not yet used to the temperature…I remembered our rides in Corsiac before, always dripping in sweat..and …I’d not brought any water with me !
I eventually reached what I think was the main village, although there didn’t appear4 to be a lot there, and so I turned around and zoomed back down the road…glad to be getting a breeze..all the way down to the beach , and then back to the campsite, late morning swim in the pool, which was almost deserted…lunch, and ..siesta, I was zonked ! – glad I’d got a pitch that was surrounded by hedging, as it provided lots of needed shade..it was only 34C in the shade !
Late afternoon, I decided it had cooled down enough for a quick ride up the coast, checking out the nearby villages and marinas. Off I set thinking this will be a pleasant evening ride..and was soon dripping in sweat again ! up and down the coastal road, which was just like a roller coaster, winding it’s way up and down, only 50+ mts each time, but it soon caught up on you (or.. me !)
I passed by the Tour de L’Osse, one of the many ancient Genoese towers, erected by the Italians when they held Corsica, to warn of the invading French ( I think !)
then as I got to the Marina of Santa Severa, I saw signs for a Spar supermarket in Luri, 5 kms away…what it didn’t say was that it was all uphill…which I eventually struggled up, arriving like a wet rag..to find a reasonable size supermarket, although I think I’ll still need to go back to Bastia, to stock up on fresh meat etc..
The village itself, had lots of interesting buildings..the church, unusually locked, the main Piazza …so now time to whizz back down to the coast, and back on the roller coaster to the campsite…a gentle evenings ride that turned into a 3 hour battle in the sun !
Phew, I need some Pasta and cheese, to give me stamina for the morning…an early start..
