Even though it was an overcast morning, I decided to stay where I was, and having got a map of the area, saw a great cycling route, which encompassed lots of the Camargue reserve http://www.reserve-camargue.org/?lang=en and, again a good choice, the day brightened considerably, and I was well rewarded.
I’d got my bread and 2 Pain au Chocolat from the camp shop, and was soon ready to go, on this trail, down through the town, around the back of the ‘Prom’ and alongside the East Plage, passing the ‘Naturist beach area’- no one sunbathing, too cloudy, what a shame ! As i rode along the trail, I soon started passing differing lagoons with flamingo’s either feeding, or sleeping in them, always at the furthers point from civilisation..
The track went alongside the beach area for a while, and then went onto the top of the Sea dyke, away from the sea beaches, but further into the lagoons and lakes which had been formed…whew, there were all sorts of birds flying overhead, feeding in the lagoons, aerial gymnastics, and me, along with hundreds of others on bikes watching , I couldn’t do justice to it in words, nor show enough pictures ( I’ve loads), so, I’ll show me !
I rode across the reserve area, as the sun got hotter, hotter and hot ! Good job I had my expedition sunhat and lots of water…eventually I rode to the edge of La Fallaise, obviously a favoured spot for the Flamingo’s, as in the distance, using my binoculars I could see thousands, nesting on a bank in the shimmering distance.. the light coloured bank in the background are Flamingo’s , tremendous… by now it was early afternoon, and I set off for my return journey, it was quite hot by now, and as I returned, I could see the water had turned a deep red, just like the Camargue rice, you may have seen, although the camera doesn’t pick it up very well…it was there though !
I rode back the same way, only deviating to go along the sea, and beaches near the end , making it harder, but more fun !
Then a reward of a slice of Pizza, and BIG ice cream in the town, before a ride back to the campsite for a rest and some shade…29 miles, in the hot,hot heat ! So, what more could I do than reward myself with a swim in the sea …and publish the pictures !
Whether I’ll stay or go tomorrow is anyone’s question..
I’ll tell you when I know the answer…Bon Soir !
Of course, it wouldn’t be the same without a Camargue sunset, so….Voila, and Bonne Nuit
