Friday 27th May - Into the Paddy Fields

I was up reasonably early, leaving Lake Viverone:

climbing the hill back up to my route... Roasted before I'd even got going in the hit early morning sunshine!

I was soon into Ropello, where the market was being set up around the clock tower

and not long after walking along next to minor roads into Caravellegio... Even though it was a small place, it had a magnificent church, and even a castle overlooking it:

Outside the town I spotted a cemetery with, again a huge church/ chapel (sadly closed)

and a handy water tap to fill my bottles from, as, even though it was a short day, I knew I was running short in the heat!!
I then arrived into the area of the rice paddy fields, flooded lands

- ideal for them pesky mosquitoes... And there were plenty to test my defensive measures!!
I crunched along through them, in very hot late morning sun, eventually finding some shade hiding under a motorway bridge!!

I arrived into Santhia around 1 pm, easily finding the pilgrim hostel, and a welcoming chap to open up and give me the key...

So I then had the afternoon to relax, look around the town, although the big church next to me never opened!!

- even a sign telling me I'd done 1200 kms, with 800 kms left to get to Rome... What a good feeling (although I wish it was closer!!)
A nice pilgrim meal at a local Trattoria for €12, and I'm ready for an early night... For an early start on a long day tomorrow!!
