Today being a public holiday in Italy, celebrating the founding of the Republic.. I along with everyone else took the day off!!
I had a small lie in, although still awake at 6!, completed by bits of washing which I put out to dry, hoping to beat the later rain (I did!), in the garden of my home in the grounds of the church
Then I headed across the covered bridge, and into the centre of town...
I had hoped for some form of ceremonies, and wasn't disappointed as a loud blaring marching band came running up the streets, stopping, playing some music and running onwards.
I then headed across to the great Cathedral and through its holy door remembering everyone as I did so... A magnificent church, with lots of side chapels around it.
I left there, wandering through the grounds of some other government establishment with lots of uniforms swirling around, before heading into a far nicer church with a great high bell tower - St Maria del Carmine...
There were lots of priests in the side chapels ready to administer the sacrament of reconciliation to those who wished it, it must have been a special event to have so many priests there... - so I went (although what the old Italian priest made of it I don't know, I think we both understood each other though!)
I then wandered back through the town taking in the views
I had lunch at the local Trattoria, a big Gelato ice cream... and headed home to sleep the afternoon away... Looking out on my own 'bell tower'
So, that's been my day off in Pavia, up early in the morning for a long days travel...
Relaxed, refreshed and... Ready!?
