To the Top of the World…almost !

We had a nice lazy start to the day today, ready to set off from the campsite at 10-30 a.m. for Exit Glacier National Park for a walk, up along the Exit glacier, to view the Harding icefield at the top http://www.nps.gov/kefj/planyourvisit/harding_icefield_trail.htm a strenuous day, that not all the group expected to achieve (but did !), they didn’t know they could climb over 3,000 ft !

We started out quite gently, along good trails immediately next to the centre, with Ryan finally deciding to lead us on a walk (from the back!) and then started climbing up through trees and vegetation, IMG_1968until after 90 minutes or so, we popped out of the trees to see the Exit glacier below and to the side of us,we would keep it in view all day from now..after a short stop, IMG_1974we continued climbing, stopping every now and then for a breather (and more pictures) continuing our remorseless climb up above, and encouraging each other to get there ! IMG_1985Finally just after 3 p.m. we all made it to the top, and were able to look over the great Harding icefield http://www.nps.gov/kefj/naturescience/the-harding-icefield.htm stretching out over the horizon, and down below.

After a congratulatory lunch,we set off to return to the valley below, at times almost as hard, tramping down the trail, although to be fair it is an excellently graded trail, for either up or down.. by 6-30 p.m. we were back at the bottom, and wending our way back to the campsite, to feast on a salmon caught earlier in the day by one of the group who went fishing instead ! Lovely, and thanks !

More toasted marshmallows on the campfire, and bed, with no time to shower pew !

Goodnight
