Saturday 30th April

A fairly bright start in Bar sur Aube, then up the road to the Abbey of Clairvaux, clearly a once great Benedictine abbey ... Now a prison !!

Another great starting point for the Via Francigena, along with information board to show!! We had our passports stamped in the office, and then off up the hills across from it looking down on the prison below

We went through a forest, going through muddier and deeper forest tracks, in gloopy mud that almost (but not quite!) filled me boots!!
After an hour or so of traversing the forest:

the expected rain arrived (and was to stay with me for the rest of the day, so no more pics!)
So it was poncho, gaiters and cap on... And continue, along a climbing and twisting trail, well marked through various tracts of forests and well away from civilisation!!

Eventually around 1230 we dropped into the village of Cirfontaines-en-Azois, where a handily placed bus stop/shelter provided somewhere to stay out of the rain whilst we ate!!

Further on then along minor roads (avoiding more forest climbs) in the constant rain, before another convenient bus stop shelter in Orges, another, final snack stop... And onward across farm tracks over the hills, across the A5 motorway, and to our days destination - Chateauvillain!!

And the welcoming B&B above La Belle Époque, run by Maggie and Steve Tait - English!!!

A nice meal in the restaurant, and early to bed!!

Hopefully tomorrows weather may be a little kinder...
