Firstly... last nights dinner... Superb!! Wonderful food, wines and attentive owners - I shared the meal with a nice German couple, on their way to Marseille to sail their boat, and a French couple... Who didn't include me!!
A good nights sleep and I was ready for breakfast at 730am, and packed and on the road by 815...
shows the quiet hamlet where Les Achots is...
Up the hill, and round the bend, to set off on the road - which I knew I'd be on all day!!
It was hot and sunny, already, so I knew it was going to be a scorcher!!
The 'official' route joined me after a few kms, near to an old pilgrim hospital...
I just kept divesting myself of warm attire, sunglasses on... And keeping going!
I arrived in Le Paully just after 11, for a late breakfast of two bananas I'd carried since yesterday, and watched the swallows/swifts diving into the river for water, and building their nests adjacent -a great diversion
I was glad of the bananas as as soon as I left Le Paully. I had a very stiff climb out of the village, for several kms, until finally things flattened out a bit, now just 'undulating' as the road travelled between the great fields of yellow rapeseed... It was hot!!
I just had to keep going, knowing it was a long way..leaving the department of the Haute Marne and entering the Haute Saone... I suppose that's progress!!
I had a lunch stop on the traffic island as I made my last turn towards Champlitte... Only another 7 kms to finish the day...
Shortly before 3 pm I saw the Chateau de Champlitte above me (that's another climb!) and made my way past the church, and chateau upwards to the tourist office:
who arranged for me to stay at a pilgrims Gite, for a whopping €15!! - and finally a sign of recognition!!
The town itself although large, has no great facilities... I've found a restaurant for later..., and the bakers for the morning!! What else can I expect??
Fair to hot weather now set for a few days... Maybe too hot - no pleasing some people is there??
