A bright sunny Sunday morning as we headed off from Montreaux around the sides of the lake to Chateau Chillon:
the mountains still weren't revealing themselves... But a few glances showed what was to come...
Today was to be a big flat walk, from the shred of Lake Leman, into the countryside, along the Grand canal and alongside the River Rhone...
It was soon quite hot as we stopped in Villeneuve for supplies ready to hit the interior and away from all the many bars and shops alongside the Lake.
As we walked along the canal, and later the river, there were few villages on our route, although we did find a nice lunch spot in Chessel with seats, toilets, water fountain... And shade!!
Carrying on alongside the waterways the mountains were appearing in front of us, but we weren't really sure which way we were going - and wouldn't be for a few days - a lovely mystery tour, each mountain revealing itself , and wondering whether I would have to climb it!
The afternoon was very hot, we'd not had much sunshine for a few days, so Slough welcome was still hard work!!
We eventually made it into St Maurice by 4 pm, and the Franciscan Hospettelerie... Being told we were 'special pilgrim guests' with lovely rooms in the old convent buildings... And a good dinner to follow later!!
I managed to get to the evening service in the church, with the Bishop as the celebrant and many monks and nuns chanting...
a nice end to a long hot day, and ever closer to the mountains!!
I even managed to meet a Roman soldier later!!
